Engineering is a very complex discipline, encompassing a wide variety of techniques, fields, specialties and courses. It forms the core for the economic development of any large nation and thus, engineers and engineering schools are generally held in high regard. Though the field of engineering is quite widespread and covers many allied areas, in short it is the application of various theories from the field of mathematics and other sciences like physics, chemistry, computers and even biology.
The ultimate aim of these applications is to advance human development in all ways possible. An Engineering school in India usually follows a four year system in which the first year is common for all the students that have been admitted. This year usually has modules in basic mathematics, physics, electronics, chemistry and English language. All these courses lay a foundation upon which the subsequent years build to create a new engineer. After that follows two to two and a half years of classes with both theory and practical modules incorporated. This is to make sure the students are familiar with the basic equipment’s in their fields and know their strengths and weaknesses.
Nowadays a few management courses are also included in the syllabus as most engineers need to oversee various management duties during the course of their work. Finally a 6 month or 1 year project is required of the students where they are guided to apply few of the principles they have learnt and use them in real time applications. The degree finally awarded after the end of the four year program is either a B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) or a B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology).
This covers the undergraduate level courses. On the post graduate side, M.Tech or M.E. courses are offered which usually last for a duration of two years. These courses focus on specialised topics under their respective departments and involve more of practical work and research than book based study. After that Ph.D. courses are also offered in many engineering schools to work on basic research and development in their respective areas.
